With more than 4 million women in sororities worldwide, there must be
some amazing benefits to being a sister. We travel paths in our lives
that take us in many directions. Imagine knowing that no matter where
those paths take you, you belong to a group that is there for you to
help you adjust. Whether it's a new college, a new job, a new city or a
new phase of your life, your sorority sisters are there. Being a sister
carries responsibilities too, but the knowledge and relationships
gained and life lessons learned offer unlimited benefits.
Sisterhood means more than wearing the same letters, because
sisterhood extends to all sorority women. It's the Panhellenic spirit
that comes forth when you meet another woman who wears Greek letters
that may be different from your own but knows what a treasure it is to
be a part of something so worthwhile. Sisterhood benefits include
having sisters on whom you can depend and being a sister who is
dependable. It's knowing people who introduce you to new experiences or
parts of the world - or being that person.
Sorority sisters are the women who help you move into college on
freshman move-in day, help you learn your way around campus and
introduce you to their friends. They share their family traditions with
you, and then they welcome you to their homes for Thanksgiving when
your own family is out of town. They are your bridesmaids, godparents
to your children and confidants for life.
Enjoying the benefits of sorority membership comes with
responsibility too. Sisterhood means learning to work in groups, deal
with conflict and give back to the community. Sororities are
values-based organizations that focus on scholarship, leadership,
service and sisterhood. Sisters run in marathons that seek cures for
diseases, host food and clothing drives, visit the elderly, read to
sick children in hospitals and raise money for various philanthropic
endeavors.
Sorority members strive for good scholarship, and many sorority
women succeed in achieving higher GPAs than the campus all-women's
average.
Sorority women are leaders on campus and the recipients of
scholarships and awards. Because of the experience gained by being a
member of a sorority, sorority women are well-prepared for life after
college. They can run meetings, plan events and lead large groups to
take action.
Sorority membership provides an unlimited network of colleagues,
professional associates, community members, support and, above all,
sisters who will always be there for you.
